Vastu Shastras (lit. «construction treatises») are part of a larger body of knowledge called Vastu Vidya (lit. «knowledge of construction»). The construction of buildings and structures also includes texts classified as “shilpa-shastras” (“treatises on craft”). While Vastu Shastras describe, first of all, the spiritual aspects of construction and site preparation, necessary rituals, etc., Shilpa Shastras describe the technical side of the process — materials, technologies, planning decisions and proportioning.
Information concerning not so much the construction as the spiritual aspects of Vastu is contained primarily in the Puranas — “Skanda Purana”, “Agni Purana”, “Vayu Purana”, “Garuda Purana”, “Matsya Purana”, “ Markandeya Purana.» It is on the basis of the texts of the Puranas that the concept of Vastu Purusha (an anthropophorphic deity — the embodiment of a building site), as well as favorable and unfavorable cardinal directions and their patron deities, is formed.
At present, two different practical approaches to the use of Vastu have emerged. One, more traditional, insists that construction must initially be carried out according to the principles of Vastu, in compliance with the relevant ritual requirements, and also initially correct in terms of the layout and proportions of the building. Other experts insist that by using “correction” methods it is possible to correct an existing structure, neutralizing the harmful effects of an initially incorrect design approach. “Correction” involves the use of more “decorative” means — changing colors, materials, installing murtis or special objects in key areas of the building.
To conduct various Vastu ceremonies and rituals, auspicious date and time are calculated using Vedic Astrology.
Vastu rituals are carried out both when purchasing a plot, house, apartment or business premises, and when moving into a new premises. Some rituals are performed to correct existing space.
All such events are carried out only after consultation with a specialist!
During the diagnosis, the specialist sees exactly which rituals are needed in your space, and which ones may, on the contrary, lead to undesirable consequences.
The concept of Vastu Shastra is based on the harmonization of the main influences of the universe and buildings/premises with different functional loads. The fundamental aspects of influence include:
- Directions
- Energy
- Elements
- Planets
- Deities
These aspects are considered for each element of the structure, and with the help of correctly established functional purposes, proportions, colors, as well as certain ritual activities, the effect of the beneficial influence of the building as a whole is achieved.
